What Is Sodium PCA? The Quiet Hydrator in Your Skincare
Turn over many ZAKAVA bottles and you'll find sodium PCA in the ingredient list. It rarely gets top billing, but it's one of the hardest-working hydrators in skincare.
What it is
PCA stands for pyrrolidone carboxylic acid. Your skin already makes it: PCA is one of the main components of the skin's natural moisturizing factor, the blend of compounds that helps the outer layer of skin hold on to water. Sodium PCA is its salt form, which skincare formulas use because it dissolves easily and is gentle on skin.
What it does
Sodium PCA is a humectant, which means it attracts water and helps hold it in the skin. The result is skin that feels softer, smoother and more comfortable, without a heavy or greasy finish.
Sodium PCA vs. hyaluronic acid
Both are humectants, and they work well together. Hyaluronic acid is best known for holding a large amount of water and leaving skin looking plump. Sodium PCA is a form of a molecule skin already uses to stay hydrated. Many formulas, including several of ours, use both.
Who it's for
Almost everyone. It's light enough for oily skin, comforting for dry skin, and rarely irritating, which makes it a good fit for sensitive skin too.
