What Is Sodium PCA? The Hydrating Ingredient Worth Knowing

If you read ingredient lists, you've probably seen sodium PCA near the top of a few of them. It doesn't get as much attention as hyaluronic acid, but it's one of the most useful hydrating ingredients in skincare.

What it is

Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid. Your skin already makes it. It's part of what's called the skin's natural moisturizing factor, a group of compounds in the outer layer of skin that help it hold onto water.

What it does

Like hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA is a humectant. It attracts water and helps keep it in the skin, so skin feels softer, smoother and more comfortable. It's lightweight and doesn't feel sticky, which is why it shows up in everything from serums to face washes.

Sodium PCA vs. hyaluronic acid

They work in a similar way and work well together. Hyaluronic acid is known for holding a large amount of water. Sodium PCA is a smaller molecule and part of skin's own moisture system. Many formulas use both to support hydration from more than one angle.

Who it's for

Almost everyone. Sodium PCA is gentle and works for most skin types, including oily skin that needs hydration without heaviness. It's especially helpful when skin feels tight or dull. As with any new product, patch test first if your skin is reactive.
