How to Use a Clay Mask for Pores and Blackheads

A clay mask is one of the simplest ways to give your skin a reset. Used the right way, it deep-cleans pores and leaves skin looking smoother and less shiny. Used the wrong way, it can leave skin tight and dry. Here's how to get it right.

Why clay?

Clays absorb excess oil and help lift away buildup from the surface of the skin. That's why they're a go-to for congested pores and the look of blackheads. Our Clay Mask for Pores and Blackheads combines white and green clays with aquatic algae and aloe vera, so it cleans without feeling harsh.

Step by step

  1. Cleanse first. Clay works best on clean skin. A gentle cleanser like the Facial Cleansing Foam removes makeup and surface oil.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer. Avoid the eye and lip area. Focus on your T-zone if that's where pores look most congested.
  3. Leave it on for about 10 minutes. You don't need to wait until it cracks. If your skin starts to feel very tight, it's time to rinse.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water. A soft, damp washcloth helps.
  5. Follow with serum and moisturizer. Clay takes away oil, so put hydration back. A hydrating serum and moisturizer keep skin comfortable.

How often?

Once or twice a week is plenty for most skin. Oily skin may enjoy twice a week. Dry or sensitive skin may prefer once a week, or using it only on the T-zone.

Common mistakes

  • Applying it too thick. A thin layer works just as well and rinses off more easily.
  • Leaving it on too long. Longer doesn't mean deeper cleaning. It just means drier skin.
  • Skipping moisturizer after. This is the step that keeps skin balanced.

Make it a weekly ritual and you'll notice your skin looks clearer and feels smoother between masks.
